Job Duties:


Assists attorneys with professional legal representation provided to County Council, the County as an entity, elected and appointed County officials and the County Departments in litigation either brought against the County or initiated by the County and other legal matters as assigned.  Work is performed under regular supervision of an attorney. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, standing, walking and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Assist attorneys in preparation of correspondence, resolutions, ordinances, pleadings and other documents as assigned; Assist attorneys with preparation of audit letters and responses to freedom of information act requests; Conduct various document searches and factual research; Maintain internal database for litigation and research files; Answer telephones, make copies, filing, schedule meetings, and maintain calendars as directed; Prepare invoices and assist with bill processing as directed; Organize documents and coordinate document productions as assigned; Prepare for and attend depositions as needed; Work with attorneys in the preparation and filing of all court documents; Act as a liaison among various internal departments as well as outside agencies or counsel; Organize and prepare exhibits, files and all other supporting documents and witnesses for hearings or trial; Handle organization of all logistics for hearings or trial; May be required to make deliveries to post office or other locations in the local area as needed;  Other duties as may be assigned.


Job Qualifications:


Thorough knowledge of litigation in federal and state courts; general knowledge of the requirements as to form, content and recording necessary to render valid legal documents; general knowledge of real estate title work and recording of deeds; ability to work with the general public in answering calls and responding to requests for information; ability to keep records and to prepare reports on activities; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; strong organizational, interpersonal skills; team-oriented mindset and strong work ethic; ability to multi-task; and problem solving skills and attention to detail.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and PowerPoint.  Proficient in use of computer, telephone, facsimile, copier, scanner, case management software, and calculator.  Prior experience filing documents with the federal court system using Pacer, use of Westlaw software for online research, and use of case management software is a plus.  Certification from an accredited paralegal program or prior experience working in a law firm or in-house legal position is required.  High school diploma required; some completion of college coursework is preferred. Possession of appropriate driver’s license that is valid in the State of South Carolina.
