Salary Range: LOW TO MID $60,000


Job Duties:


  • Compiles list of annual business inspections to perform; submits list to shift supervisors for completion.
  • Conducts certificate of occupancy inspections for new businesses.
  • Reviews building and development plans for compliance with applicable laws, standards, and building codes and county ordinances.
  • Plans, coordinates, and presents public education programs pertaining to department services and activities.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable standards, laws, and ordinances.
  • Attends training classes, seminars, and workshops pertaining to assigned duties.
  • Manages the inspection database to ensure annual inspections are completed and certificates of occupancy are issued.
  • Conducts unscheduled inspections of businesses based on information received from department personnel and the general public.
  • Reviews inspection reports prepared by department personnel.
  • Meets with local elected and appointed officials pertaining to code enforcement, zoning, and other related issues.
  • Coordinates, supervises, or conducts investigations of suspicious or accidental fires, environmental crimes, serious hazardous situations, and fire-related injuries and death to determine cause and origin.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:


  • Associate Degree in Fire Prevention Technology, Fire Science or Building Construction Management or a combination of education and expertise that provides the required knowledge for the position.
  • South Carolina Fire Marshal Certification (South Carolina Fire Marshal Rules and Regulations)
  • ICC or NFPA certification as Fire Inspector II or higher, and a minimum of three (3) years of fire prevention related experience.
  • ICC or NFPA certification as Fire Plans Examiner
  • Three (3) years field experience as a Fire Inspector
  • Three (3) years field experience as a Fire Investigator
