Reporting to the County Attorney, the Deputy County Attorney provides legal advice and assistance to the County Administrator, the Deputy County Administrator, senior management and other county employees, County Council, committees, and boards. Beaufort County is seeking an experienced attorney for immediate placement in this role.

The successful candidate will be required to:
•    Work closely with the County Attorney to provide legal counsel and advice to County Council, the County Administrator and the departments of Beaufort County government on a wide range of legal issues;
•    Research state statues and local ordinances in order to draft and amend ordinances;
•    Draft resolutions and proclamations;
•    Draft, review and approve contracts for the purchase of goods and services, leases, releases, memoranda of understandings, legal agreements of all types and correspondences between governmental entities and third parties;
•    Draft legal memoranda, briefs, pleadings and other legal documents as needed;
•    Prosecute and defend civil cases at all levels in state and federal court;
•    Prosecute and defend ordinance violations in magistrate court and on appeal;
•    Appear before the County Administrator, the Deputy County Administrator , County Council and its committees, Beaufort County’s board, commissions and committees to provide legal advice on matters of law relevant to matters which are under consideration;
•    Work independently and in conjunction with other members of the legal department and other departments;
•    Be responsive to the County Administrator, Deputy County Administrator, members of Council and governmental departments in the absence of the County Attorney

•    Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school
•    Admitted to practice law in South Carolina (member of the SC Bar) including all relevant Rule 403 observations
•    Admitted to the United States District Court for South Carolina (preferred)
•    Five (5) to seven (7) years related experience practicing law with a combination of government and litigation experience preferred


All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
