Job Title:    Shift Supervisor/Battalion Chief
Salary:          $38,894 to $42,881 Depending on Qualifications
Work Schedule:      12 Hour Shift Rotation
Location:          Blaney Fire Station and Cassatt Fire Station

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under limited supervision, performs firefighting and fire prevention duties in order to protect and safeguard lives and property of citizens in the event of fire. Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire station and equipment. Assists in the planning, direction, coordinate training and safety activities of the department, assists with inspections, fire safety education and related public relation activities. Reports to the Fire Chief.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Is responsible for saving lives and property of city residents and others in case of fire or other emergencies such as tornadoes, floods, etc.; supervises all department firefighting and housekeeping; directs, supervises and instructs personnel in the use of apparatus and fire equipment necessary to control and extinguish fires; investigates all fires.

Assists in the supervision of department personnel which involves instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; acting on employee problems; and recommending transfers/promotions, disciplinary actions, discharges and salary increases.

Manages and directs firefighting and other emergency operations, fire and life safety inspections, short and long range planning, training programs, maintenance and upkeep of equipment, emergency activities, and public relations activities.

Ensures compliance with local, state and federal worker safety standards

Assists with fire safety inspections and fire and life safety education

Enforces compliance with all codes and standards

Utilizes and operates various types of machinery and equipment including fire apparatus, hoses, air compressors, generators, radios, computers, tablets, copier, chain saw, hand tools, pumpers, fire extinguishers, and general office supplies.

Works under stressful, high-risk conditions and with life threatening situations.

Is responsible for responding to on-call emergencies at all times.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of five years firefighting experience or any related combination of education and experience. Minimum of 21 years of age. Must possess SC Fire Academy Fire Instructor Certification or equivalent. Firefighter 2, EVDT, Haz-Mat Ops, First Responder, Incident Safety Officer, Fire Officer 1 and Auto Extrication. NIMS (ICS) 100, 200, 700 and 800. Possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License. (Class E preferred) Fire Investigation certification will be required with in first year.
